Havana 2017

In Cuba, women have equal constitutional rights as men in the economicpoliticalcultural and social fields, as well as in the family. According to Article 44 of the Cuban Constitution, "The state guarantees women the same opportunities and possibilities as men in order to achieve woman’s full participation in the development of the country."

Havana Soundscapes use the potential of sound to engage the listener physically and emotionally. They offer a different sort of encounter with the streets of Havana Vieja - in the early morning, during the day and at night.

From Here until There (stereo sound file 11’.10”). is a sonic journey through Havana Vieja, from early morning to late at night, with its echoes, rhymes and correspondences, revealed through an exploration of the everyday and commonplace and unforced oppositions in the meeting of the soft and the loud, the musical and the cacophonous, the modern and the traditional, the touristic and the popular. From Here until There is edited from several hours of sound recordings made over a two week period at different times of day and night in the old town of Cuba’s capital city. The intention is to allow the soundscape to function to show the social without story, and to allow the listener’s imagination to conjure images of ordinary people going about their day to day business with irrepressible liveliness, humour, musicality and irreverence.

From Here until There (stereo sound file 11’.10”). is a tribute to the poetry of Margaret Tait’s slow, gentle and acute observation. A sonic journey through Havana Vieja, from early morning to late at night, it references Tait’s Where I am is Here, with its echoes, rhymes and correspondences, revealed through an exploration of the everyday and commonplace. Tait’s simple and unforced oppositions are referenced too, in the meeting of the soft and the loud, the musical and the cacophonous, the modern and the traditional, the touristic and the popular. From Here until There is edited from several hours of sound recordings made over a two week period at different times of day and night in the old town of Cuba’s capital city. The intention is to allow the soundscape to function as does Tait’s combination of image, sounds and music, using its own voice to show the social without story, and to allow the listener’s imagination to conjure images of ordinary people going about their day to day business with irrepressible liveliness, humour, musicality and irreverence. 1.
