Away

'Away' is a site-specific sound work created for 'VACANT. IN USE', an exhibition at Deptford Old Police Station as part of Deptford X fringe 2017. Seven women lend the corporality of their own, unique, voices to the seldom-heard words of women prisoners. These fragmented testimonies invite the listener to consider the fragility of their own liberty, mental stability and significant relationships, and how easily these can be shattered or slip away. The sound installation was located in one of the former women's cells. Sound combines with the setting itself - the narrow bed, the covered slops bucket, the acoustic of its unforgiving surfaces- to shift the emphasis from the visual to an encounter or experience for the listener. 'Away' forms part of a larger body of work which explores how groups and individuals respond and react to society’s expectations: how objectification and exclusion from mainstream society can give license to chart other ways of being. Stereo sound recording, 4 minutes 35 seconds. 2017
