Sabrina Fuller is based in London and Manchester. Her interest lies in how groups and individuals respond and react to society’s expectations: how objectification and exclusion from mainstream society can give license to chart other ways of being. Using participative practice and techniques of verbatim theatre, she explores how a classification as Other allows a freedom to develop the language of difference and form unlikely alliances. Still and moving image, voice, sound and text are tools for her investigation of the border between self-image and self-presentation – the internal and the external –and its inevitable entwining with the spectacle of representation. Place offers an amalgam of metaphor and context throughout, with its pull on what we can know and who we can be.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally. She was a co-founder and member of the collective Kiosk, whose aims were to showcase the work of emerging artists and to extend the audience for their work by exhibiting in spaces outside the bounds of the traditional gallery system, and was for six years a Board member of Redeye, the photography network. In 2015-16 she gained an MA in Photography from London College of Communication, part of University of the Arts, London.
Solo shows: Teatre del Passat (Theatre of the Past), Sala Monserrat Roig, Pati Llimona, Barcelona (2011); Kings at the People’s History Museum, Manchester (2010), and Se Quien Quieres Ser (Just Who You Want to Be), Sala Ruines, Pati Llimona, Barcelona (2007), were each inspired by her interest in groups and individuals who use a different rulebook in their habitation of the city.
Her work has been shown at Manchester City Art Gallery and at Preston’s Harris Gallery. Recent group shows include:
